Products for problem behaviors: CHEWING

Here at the rescue, we’ve had quite the opportunities to test different dog related products, and in quantity!

With our background in training, combined with our desire to make dog ownership as easy and enjoyable for everyone involved, we have decided to work on publishing a regular blog, highlighting our favorite products for various areas of dog ownership (and maybe even earn a small bit from any products purchased from our affiliate links, which of course, ALWAYS goes directly back to veterinary care, food, and anything else rescue dog related!)

First on our list of things to cover, are PRODUCTS TO HELP PREVENT/DETER/REDIRECT CHEWING!

A dog who chews everything or just too many of the wrong things can be incredibly frustrating, and can often put dogs at risk of losing their homes, or of immense vet bills or dog hospitalizations/fatalities from ingestion related problems.

Chewing can very often be a sign of boredom, discontent, stress, anxiety, or otherwise less than positive mindstate. With this in mind, we also will spotlight some products that provide dogs mental stimulation or comfort. Chewing can also be due to physical discomfort - such as losing puppy teeth, or the final set of molars coming in.. which we have recommendations for as well!

The following are some of our favorites! Stay tuned for more!

WATER BUFFALO HORNS:

We love these, and use them regularly!
They’re one of THE most affordable and long lasting chew toys that dogs really enjoy chewing on. Unlike cow hooves, they generally are odorless, and they’re about half the cost of elk or deer antlers. We also feel more comfortable safety-wise with the horns than with antlers, because once dogs get the marrow out of the antlers we worry about the structural integrity being compromised and causing a potential vet bill due to injury from an antler/bone shard (that could just be an “us” concern though - we own this.) Buffalo horns are made of a dense, hard keratin-like substance, reminiscent somewhat of really hard toenails, which more “fray” or split like a nail when heavily chewed on.

Even with 7 large dogs sharing regular (semi-constant) use of about the same number of buffalo horns, these inexpensive chews often last five or more months (or until they’re lost, only to be found later). For $10-20, that’s a fabulous lifespan!

Buffalo horns help keep teeth and gums healthy by cleaning and stimulating them as dogs chew the horns. They can also serve to keep a bored/anxious dog occupied, or provide soothing to sore gums caused by teething, by stuffing the inside of the horn with peanut butter, yogurt, applesauce, etc, and freezing!

KONG Rubber Toys!

These long lasting toys are another great option with many uses!

We recommend getting the black ones, which are for power/aggressive chewers, and last FOREVER!

These are another great toy that can be used to help provide mental stimulation and relief from teething pain by stuffing the inside with peanut butter/applesauce/yogurt and freezing!

The beehive shapes are our favorites, but these additional Kong toys are also awesome and worth mentioning! (Again, you’ll notice, we prefer the black/durable Kongs, for extended durability!)
